His family background was further enhanced when his father stepped away from the day-to-day farming operations to work in a new capacity with Farm Bureau of Iowa while his mother launched a successful career in real estate. Dereck's own personal career history has found him guiding in the backcountry of Alaska taking in breathtaking views while guiding clients to trophy Coastal and Interior Grizzly, Dall Sheep, Caribou and Moose.
